Is it better to donate clothes to a charity shop or give money?
Donate clothes when they are clean, dry and sellable — the shop turns them into cash, and retail Gift Aid can add 25% of the sale if you qualify. Give money when you have no honest stock, cannot reach a till, or want a named piece of care today. This website only takes money for costed animal-rescue gifts; we do not accept your bags. Neither route is a skip for wet waste.
Who should skip this: Skip this if you needed a furniture van, a PAT-test store, or a live animal. Skip it if you wanted us to publish a national “clothes vs cash” percentage we do not hold.
When do donated clothes raise more than a fiver in your pocket?
When they sell on the rail. A shop’s job is volume: a £4 jumper times a hundred is a day’s takings. You will not beat that on Vinted with the same pile unless you enjoy postage. Retail Gift Aid, if you sign at a registered charity, adds 25p per £1 of those sales at no cost to you.

When is money the kinder gift?
When the cupboard is empty of honest stock. When you are overseas and the till is in Leeds. When the cause you care about is animal care at a partner shelter, not a high-street rail. Money does not need steaming. It also does not fill a skip if you were about to donate sludge.
On this site £10 is a week of rescue-dog meals. That sentence is the point of a costed gift. It is not a claim that cash is always “more efficient” in the abstract — we do not hold a sector-wide efficiency study.
Why can’t I post my clothes to charity-shop.org?
We have no stockroom, no steamer, no rag merchant contract. The domain is a virtual gift shop. Bags belong at physical chains listed on the directory. Mixing those jobs would make us a liar about both.

Does giving money mean shops do not need clothes?
No. More than 9,900 UK charity shops (CRA, checked 13 August 2026) run on donated goods plus volunteers. Good clothes still matter. The false choice is “never donate clothes” versus “never give cash”. Use both when both are honest.

How should you decide in one minute?
Friend test for the garment. Opening hours for the till. Gift Aid only if you pay enough tax and the till is a charity. Money here only if you want costed animal care and accept a CIC. If that is too many clauses, use the router.
