Donate to a charity shop or sell on Vinted?

Reviewed — desk-researched by Kaiser Khan

Desk-researched 13 August 2026. Describes ordinary UK resale-app practice and charity-retail Gift Aid from GOV.UK (checked the same day). We do not publish Vinted’s current fee table — it changes.

Should you donate clothes to a charity shop or sell them on Vinted?

Sell on Vinted, eBay or Depop if the item is honestly photographable, you will post it, and you want the cash. Donate to a charity shop if you want the hours back, the item is sellable on a rail, and — if you pay enough UK tax — you can sign retail Gift Aid so the charity claims 25p extra per £1 of the sale. Do not use either route for wet, stained or unsafe goods.

Who should skip this: This is not a Vinted fee calculator and not tax advice. We do not take a cut of resale apps. Skip it if you needed a furniture collection slot or an animal-rehoming form.

What does each route actually cost you?

Resale costs time: photos, description, messages, postage, and the risk it never sells. Donation costs a trip during opening hours. Retail Gift Aid, if you qualify, adds money for the charity without taking it from you. A CIC gift on this website is a third route: money, not clothes, and no Gift Aid.

When is selling the honest choice?

Designer, barely worn, or sizes people hunt for. You will photograph stains. You will post on time. You are not using “I’ll list it” as a way to store guilt in a cupboard for a year. If you will not list it this week, donate it this week.

Apps are not a moral upgrade on a charity shop. They are a marketplace. Fees, buyer protection and postage are the seller’s problem. We will not invent a percentage you “should” net.

When is donating the honest choice?

When the item is good enough for a rail and you value the hours more than the cash. When you will sign Gift Aid at a registered charity. When a mixed bag of ordinary high-street clothes would take ten listings and earn less than the diesel. Volunteers can sell a £4 jumper at volume. You probably will not.

See what shops accept and what not to donate.

Can you sell and then donate the proceeds?

Yes, and that is a real gift if you actually transfer the money. It is also how people delay forever. If the listing is still “draft” in November, donate the garment. If you do send proceeds to this shop, remember WARN is a CIC: no Gift Aid on that cash either.

A direct costed tag — £10 for a week of rescue-dog meals — is cleaner than a promise to donate “whatever Vinted makes”.

What about eBay for Charity?

Some sellers list with a charity donation option on eBay. That is a different product: you still do the postage. It can be legitimate. Read which organisation is named. “For charity” in a title is not a regulator filing. We do not broker those listings.

If the point was an animal-rescue present with a certificate this afternoon, an app sale will miss the birthday. Use last-minute e-certificates.

When is neither selling nor donating right?

When the item is wet, unsafe, or a lie waiting for a buyer. When you needed a van for a sofa. When a child expected a pet.

  • Broken electricals — specialist testing or WEEE recycling, not an app photo of a frayed cable
  • Identifiable uniforms — data and impersonation risk; many shops refuse them
  • You will not post — do not list

The verdict: Vinted or the shop?

Sell what you will actually ship this week. Donate what a stranger would wear, during opening hours, with Gift Aid if you qualify. Give money when the cupboard is empty of honest stock. Do not launder waste through either marketplace.

Who should skip the app: anyone who has already failed to list last season’s bag. Who should skip this CIC if Gift Aid on cash is the point: give to a registered charity instead.

Common questions

Does donating clothes get me a tax receipt?

Retail Gift Aid is claimed by the charity on the sale, not paid to you as a rebate, if you sign and pay enough UK tax. Selling on Vinted is taxable in some cases — that is HMRC, not this page.

Is Vinted better for the planet than a shop?

Reuse is reuse if someone wears it. A shop that has to bin your damp bag is worse than a sale. We do not publish a carbon ranking we cannot source.

Can I donate unsold Vinted stock?

Yes, if it is still clean and complete. Do not donate items that came back stained from a buyer unless you wash them.
