How to choose an animal charity to support

How do you choose an animal charity to support?
Check six things: the legal form (charity, CIC, something else), who receives the money, whether gifts are costed or vague, whether partners or programmes are named, whether numbers have a date, and whether a human contact exists. Prefer organisations that will say what they are not. Skip glossy urgency with no filing history.
Who should skip this: This is not a ranking of UK animal charities and not a Charity Commission substitute. We will not score third parties. We will tell you how this shop answers the same six checks.
What legal form are you actually giving to?
Registered charity, CIC, CIO, limited company, overseas NGO, or a Facebook appeal. Only some of those can claim Gift Aid. Only some file public accounts. “Charity” in a domain name is not a registration. Search the Charity Commission or Companies House for the exact legal name.
This shop is not a registered charity. Donations go to WORLD ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK CIC (company 17298990), a CIC with a statutory asset lock. That is stated on about and in this answer.
Does the gift name the care and the price together?
Costed tags beat vague “save animals” buttons when you want a sentence for the certificate. Vague unrestricted funds beat fake itemisation when the organisation is honest that money goes where needed. The failure mode is a specific-sounding gift that is neither costed nor unrestricted — just marketing.
Our prices come from partner-shelter reviews (currently 17 July 2026, next 17 October 2026) and render from one module so a tag cannot drift from the till. Example: £10 is a week of rescue-dog meals.
Are partners, programmes or filings actually named?
A named Companies House number, a named regulator, and a named “if we wind up, assets go to X” beat a stock photo of a sad puppy. Ask where last year’s money went. “Trust us, it’s for the animals” is not a method.
WARN’s nominated asset-lock recipient is World Animal Protection, a registered charity. That is a winding-up rule, not a claim that your tag is a donation to World Animal Protection.
What should make you walk away?
Gift Aid offered by a non-charity. Guaranteed medical outcomes for a named wild animal you can “meet”. Pressure to pay via personal accounts. No address. Stolen photos. Rankings that are for sale. If any of those appear, stop.
We do not mark up other organisations with Review or aggregateRating. If we cannot source a number, we omit it. That refusal is part of the test you should apply to us too.
What are the six checks, on one line each?
Write them down before you pay. If a page cannot answer three of them, you do not have enough to give with a clear head. Glossy urgency is not an answer.

When should you ignore this checklist?
When you are already a trustee doing due diligence with accountants — you need filings, not a blog. When you are choosing a local rehoming centre to adopt from: visit, do not shop a certificate.

The verdict: how should you choose?
Legal form, money path, costed-or-honestly-unrestricted, named filings, dated numbers, contact. If a site fails those, do not give. If this site fails them on a page you are looking at, email us — that is what the corrections log is for.

Common questions
Is a CIC worse than a charity?
It is different: charity-like asset lock, no Gift Aid, Companies House instead of the Charity Commission. Worse only if you needed Gift Aid or assumed charity registration.
Should I only give to registered charities?
That is a valid personal rule. It is not the only valid rule. If it is yours, give elsewhere — we will not disguise the CIC.
Do you rank animal charities?
